We asked students and parents what problems or difficulties they face in Haiti. Here is what they said. . .
HANTZ P. Haiti has a beautiful country, but (there is) insecurity, life is expensive, hunger, etc. makes everything lose value in a country. I give you thanks for all your sacrifices you make for us as a sponsor. I ask God to protect you, to give you good health.
SHESSIE A. Here where I am, we’re not good at all because of the situation of the country. I have some family of mine in Port-au-Prince…. We don’t know if they are alive or if they’re dead…. I have spent 4 months sleeping under a roof with my momma because we don’t have a place to sleep. It’s a friend of my momma who gave us a little place for us to rest our bodies so that we didn’t fight the damp night air again. …if it wasn’t for you, it would be even worse for me. I never stop telling you thank you. May God bless you so that you can continue doing this work.
NERETTE P. Problem of insecurity, misery, don’t have work, don’t have food, rain doesn’t fall. Here where my family are, they’re living in misery, they’re hungry, they don’t have a house for them to sleep. I count on you very much. I am continuing to pray for you.
MARCKENLEY V. Haiti is one country in the world that is experiencing a great instability in the political plan and social insecurity. That puts the population in great difficulty for primary needs like “Education, a plan to live, clothes, food, etc.” Insecurity is making the problems much worse.
RUTH J. In my country we lack security. Innocent people are dying, tears are filling our eyes. Meanwhile we don’t have a president, there are manifestations every day, but God is stronger. …thank you very much because you don’t get discouraged with us.
LUSSIANDRO L. I feel tired with this country. Each day I hear bad news. Those things disturb my spirit. Each time I hear that bad news I feel my heart is worn out. …I truly appreciate all the time, energy and attention you give to help me. May God bless you and your family a lot.
ESTHER A. I am thanking God for the roll you play in my life because without you I don’t know how I would have passed in school.… Today it’s you who are helping me. Tomorrow I can come to take your place. It’s not me myself who is giving back to you for that great work that you are doing, it’s God. That’s what keeps me from being discouraged because I can’t eat or I don’t have money for transport (to school). But as I remember your sacrifices, I take strength for me to work to succeed.
DAVIDSON C. Problems we have in this country: there are bandits who divide, children who don’t go to school, people who live in misery.
DANESHKA E. There are many bad things that are happening in the country. People can disappear and nobody knows where they went. People kidnap people, bandits they do crimes, they shoot people, often people are afraid to leave their house because of the insecurity.
Since I was very little until now you have always been helping me, and I don’t deserve you. I take all the things you have done for me as great things. I pray to God to always make things go well for you. I appreciate you and all you do for me. I hope that when you read my letter it will make you smile.
DAMAELLE F. There is a big problem of insecurity in my country. Many times I have gone 2-3 weeks without going to school because many are shot, the roads are blocked. Truly many times my country of Haiti gives us big headaches. Life is expensive, but thanks to God I’m persevering. “Thank you” isn’t sufficient for me to tell you, but I am never stopping praying for you.
RICHARDSON F. The problems in my country that cause anger are especially insecurity and no jobs for young people. But for me, I tell you thank you very much for everything you are doing for me.
STEPH F. The situation in our country truly stresses us, but we are holding on with Jesus.
WENSLEY F. Insecurity is ravaging the country, many people have lost their lives under bad bandits. That makes me very sad.
FEICA F. There are lots of children who cannot go to school, cannot eat. They are living with lots of stress. Those who finish school, they can’t find work. Please help my big sister to go to a sewing school… because our momma can’t work, so we can’t eat and go with our momma to the hospital because she’s sick in the heart.
EDSON P. Our difficulties are because we don’t have a president. Bandits do what they want. Many people are dying in the country. Children cannot go to school. I am dying with hunger. Our parents, they are not working. I am making an effort to always pass in school so I can help my other brothers and sisters advance too. I recognize the things you do.
YVENSKY S. From day to day the life is becoming harder, insecurity is increasing, bandits taking people’s houses. We cannot sleep without fearing a kidnapping. Life is expensive and there’s no work. But I am very happy for me to write you this letter so that I can tell you thank you. I am praying for God to continue blessing you, protecting you and your family.
JAELLE M. In our country each day people are dying, the level of unemployment and misery is increasing, people are living stunned. …But despite it all I’m making an effort with school to help myself and encourage you…. I am asking for God to protect you, give you health, guide you and all your family.
MIRDENAEL R. Thank you very much because you helped me go to school. School is going to open and already I am happy that I am going to rejoin my friends. I promise I am working more. I give you thanks for everything you have done for me.
DEBORAH J. I am always making an effort for me to work in school so that I can make you proud of me. I am continuing to pray to God for you to give you courage and strength.
MALAIKA M. Thank you for the school year you contributed for me. I was very happy to receive it. Thank you, thank you for that. Myself along with all my family never stop telling you thank you.
Facing these problems and difficulties, students like Richardson share their heartfelt gratitude with their sponsors.
